I AM THANKFUL

Today I am thankful that Alan took the day off to be
with me.  We picked up some Bourbon Chicken
for dinner.  YUM!

LITTLE BOXES

I am trying to put my old Christmas cards to good use.
I found a way to make little boxes with them.
Maybe I can give them as token gifts.
I wonder what I can put inside?
I think they are cute!

SWEETNESS

Oh! Look what we are missing out on.
Little sweet cuddly Cody is four months old.
Isn't he a precious baby?

I AM THANKFUL

I am thankful that I never have to walk alone.
God is always with me.

TO ALL YOU TURNIP LOVERS

(Picture from the web)

I have been having so much fun on FaceBook with my friends
about TURNIPS.  For some reason, I love TURNIPS.

I Googled to find out their nutritional value.
Turnips contain potassium and iron
and are a good source of vitamin C.

36 calories per cup

What I didn't know was that they are
fed to livestock.
I should have guessed because
in the story of The Three Pigs,
they went to buy TURNIPS.

Here is a recipe I found that sounds similar
to the one we all make using only potatoes.

Garlic-Mashed Turnips and Potatoes

serves 6

1 pound turnips, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces

1 pound potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces

4 cloves garlic, peeled

3 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons sour cream or plain yogurt

Salt and pepper

In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the turnip, potato, and garlic for 10 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Drain and puree the vegetables and garlic through a food mill. (A food processor is not recommended, as it can turn potatoes very starchy.) Beat in the butter and sour cream and season with salt and pepper.

SOME BENEFITS TO EATING TURNIPS

~Good physique and no excess fat because of low calories

~High quantity of Vitamin C and anti-oxidants help curb free radicals and destructive oxidation reactions

~Lowers the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancers of the stomach, pancreas, bladder, and lung diseases

~Prevents and heals up a wide range of health problems because of high nutrient content

~Very rich source of calcium, phosphor, folic acid and magnesium, essential for all-round development of human body

~Helps prevent cataracts and cardiovascular disease due to large amount of lutein

The hungry New Englanders disdained them as plebeian, (pertaining to the common people) though they ate them to prevent scurvy, preferably with mutton. Early New Yorkers ate them in a Dutch combo: boiled and mashed with potatoes and smeared with butter. The Pennsylvania Dutch often made coleslaw with turnips instead of cabbage, a concept similar to turnip kraut, a variation on cabbage sauerkraut.

Call me COMMON, call me LITTLE PEOPLE,
but I dearly LOVE TURNIPS!

I AM THANKFUL

November 18, 2009

I am thankful that God is by nature
merciful.  He does not treat us as we rightfully
deserve.  For this grace
I am thankful.

NO SALT ON MY TURKEY THIS YEAR

(picture from a blog who copied it from a blog, who copied it from a blog)

Each day belongs to the Lord.
 He is sovereign over time,
and nothing occurs apart from His will.

I had my own plans yesterday.
I had a doctor's appointment at my new doctor's office.
Even though I felt funny, like my face was
going to fall off, I had planned to do some things
after the appointment.

They checked my bloodpressure and found it
to be rather high, so they kept me for two hours.
She checked me out thoroughly, then let me go.

I am to up my bloodpressure meds and take it easy.
So, I came home and went to bed for the rest of the day.

I think this means the end of SALT for me.
No salt on my turkey this year!
I LOVE salt!

I AM THANKFUL

November 17, 2009

I must have slept through this thankful thought yesterday.
I am thankful for a doctor who kept me long
and checked me thoroughly.
Before going in I said to the Lord,
"Whatever they say is whatever they say.
I will accept it."
I guess I was feeling badly.
Today, the 18th, I feel better.

THANKSGIVING STORIES

How are you preparing your turkey this Thanksgiving? I read a funny story about how one family prepared their turkey and what happened to it.

This family loved to deep-fry their turkeys every Thanksgiving. One Thanksgiving the husband had just taken the fried turkey out of the fryer and placed it on the metal draining rack on top of some newspapers on the asphalt driveway.

He went inside for just a minute to get something, when the in-laws arrived. They promptly ran over the turkey, jamming it underneath the car. The husband came back outside and had to direct them in backing up their car to get it off the turkey, since it was jammed underneath.

They cut the tire marks off the turkey and the gouges too and ate the good parts of the bird for dinner.
Isn't that funny?

~~~~~~~~~
When I was around nine years old I recall a funny thing that happened at the Thanksgiving table. Mother was serving her fabulous tasting pumpkin pie and this particular year (1953) she had a special surprise for us. It was a can of Reddi-Whip.
None of them knew how to use it. My brother who is five years older than I, was getting ready to put some on his pie.
Mom said, “No, no, Jimmy, let me do that for you!” She proceeded to turn the can upside down, but evidently not enough. The whipping cream went all over the wall that had been newly wallpapered and all over Jimmy. He sat there with a dumb-founded look on his face with whipping cream dripping off his ears. We all nearly died laughing!
Isn’t that hilarious?
Do you have any funny stories about Thanksgiving?
I AM THANKFUL
(A little tree at our church)
November 15, 2009
Have I mentioned how thankful I am for our church?
Today our pastor had the best sermon.
It was just what we needed to hear.
I was sitting beside my friend, Julie, and as soon as
the service was over, she and I talked about how
the topic was something we all need to be reminded.
As we stood at the door afterwards greeting
the flow of people leaving, one of my friends hugged
me and agreed that it was something she needed to hear.
After viewing the picture,
can you guess what he might have talked about?
There must have been eight or ten people who prayed
to receive Jesus as their Savior.  I had my head down
and eyes closed, but Dr. Bob acknowledged many people
who raised their hands.  Praise God!
DEVOTIONAL BY SPURGEON
When I read this devotional by Spurgeon, I thought, We REALLY need to search our hearts to see if we are truly following ONE God.....the LORD JESUS!  God demands pure faith in Him.  In today's world it seems to be acceptable to say we have faith in God, AND  grasp for other ways to work out the situation.  This is a most thought provoking read!
"I will cut off them that worship and that swear by the Lord,
and that swear by Malcham."
-- Zephaniah 1:5
Such persons thought themselves safe because they were with both
parties: they went with the followers of Jehovah, and bowed at the same
time to Malcham. But duplicity is abominable with God, and hypocrisy
his soul hateth. The idolater who distinctly gives himself to his false
god, has one sin less than he who brings his polluted and detestable
sacrifice unto the temple of the Lord, while his heart is with the
world and the sins thereof. To hold with the hare and run with the
hounds, is a dastard's policy. In the common matters of daily life, a
double- minded man is despised, but in religion he is loathsome to the
last degree. The penalty pronounced in the verse before us is terrible,
but it is well deserved; for how should divine justice spare the
sinner, who knows the right, approves it, and professes to follow it,
and all the while loves the evil, and gives it dominion in his heart?
My soul, search thyself this morning, and see whether thou art guilty
of double-dealing. Thou professest to be a follower of Jesus-dost thou
truly love him? Is thy heart right with God? Art thou of the family of
old Father Honest, or art thou a relative of Mr. By-ends? A name to
live is of little value if I be indeed dead in trespasses and sins. To
have one foot on the land of truth, and another on the sea of
falsehood, will involve a terrible fall and a total ruin. Christ will
be all or nothing. God fills the whole universe, and hence there is no
room for another god; if, then, he reigns in my heart, there will be no
space for another reigning power. Do I rest alone on Jesus crucified,
and live alone for him? Is it my desire to do so? Is my heart set upon
so doing? If so, blessed be the mighty grace which has led me to
salvation; and if not so, O Lord, pardon my sad offence, and unite my
heart to fear thy name.
I AM THANKFUL
There are lots of things to be thankful for.
The one big thing we are thankful for is to have finished
putting up the crown molding in our bedroom.
It seemed like a huge project, and we are glad it is over!
Now I have the rest of the year to fill in the nail holes,
paint and put the last coat of paint on the woodwork.
I can do that any snowy day in January if I want to.
WILL IDA RETURN?
(accu-weather)
Hmmmmmm!
This is interesting!
I AM THANKFUL
November 13, 2009
I am thankful for God's protection over our son and his family
as they experience the remnants of Ida.
There is no more blessed place to be than in
God's protective grasp.
IDA'S WINDS ARE STILL HOWLING
Ainsley called this afternoon to let us know they were okay.
She said that it has been raining continuously for two days.
They lost power last night and still do not have it.
Water is coming in her back door but she keeps towels
down to soak it up.
Roads are closed but not the road to her house.
Schools are closed.
I am glad that Ainsley's family lives nearby, and
she can go to their house to eat because
they have electricity.
Ida is just hanging around the beach!
November 12, 2009
I had to get a new mixer yesterday.
My old one bit the dust!
The one thing I like about this one,
the beaters are nothing but wire.
It should be easy to clean.
I am grateful to be able to get a new mixer.
It looks like it is going to be a rainy day here in the Northeast.
That is okay.
I have all the ingredients for baking.
I plan to bake a lot of cookies today for the Coffee Center on Sunday.
I think a good coffee cookie would be ~
~Applesauce Cookies
~Molasses Cookies
~Sour Cream Cookies
~Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
~Cranberry Pumpkin Cookies
Hmmmmmm......
I will let you know which ones I will pick.
I AM THANKFUL
November 10, 2009
I am thankful for Alan, my husband.
He really takes good care of me,
and sees to it that I have what I need.
He is a good man!
I found this sweet little guy on the internet.
He looks so much like his two brothers.
This little guy is our newest grandson, Cody.
He is growing so fast and getting so big.
I love his little smile.
I AM THANKFUL
November 9,2009
I am thankful for Indian Summer!
The definition of Indian Summer is
a period of warm weather
 after the first hard frost.
It was 70 degrees today!
BABY DEDICATION
We had a baby dedication at church yesterday.
One of the mothers sang to her baby.
When she was done singing this song,
little Joshua gave her the biggest smile.
Everyone in the audience went
awwwwwww!
He see's me in the morning,
Lifting him out of bed.
The sun comes with little warning,
A brand new day's ahead.
To the kitchen for some breakfast,
A plate of toasted bread, (creamy cereal)
A cup of milk just as expected, (bottle of milk)
Close your eyes and bow your head.
You can thank him for anything you want to,
For the flower's and the trees
And pray,Lord Jesus, make me,
A little boy on my knees.
He's Mommy's little helper.
Learning to comb his hair.
And loves his baby sister, (his older brother)
Though he doesn't always share.
A quarter in the bucket,
A memory verse or two,
Although he may not know it,
He's beginning to follow you.
You can thank him for anything you want to,
For your Daddy and for me.
And pray, Lord Jesus, make me,
A little boy on my knees.
As we teach our Son to serve the Lord, in every way,
Lord the most important thing is this that we now pray,
Lord, we thank you everything you give us, but most importantly,
We pray Lord Jesus, make our Son a little boy on his knees.
Lord we thank you for everything you give us, but most importantly
We pray, Lord Jesus, make our Son,
A little boy on his knees.
We pray that someday he'll become,
A young man on his knees.
I AM THANKFUL
November 8, 2009
I am thankful that I was priviledged to meet the MARTINS.
Tonight at the concert, their testimonies were as inspiring as their songs
and their singing was FABULOUS!
They were so transparent and humble.
I am so glad that I didn't miss it!
COME HEAR THE MARTINS TONIGHT
This is the MARTINS!
They are brother and sisters and their blend is AMAZING!
The doors open tonight at 5:30 PM and the concert
is at 6.
Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Cost: $8 for ages 13 and older.
$5 for children 12 and under.
They were so gracious to allow Alan  to take a picture
of me with them for my blog friends.
I was so excited to meet them.
They were so kind and gracious!
The service this morning was PHENOMINAL!
The first choir song was so GLORIOUS!
There was recognition of one of the Pastors for his service,
there was a baby dedication like none other I have seen.
After which the mother sang a song to her baby
entitled,
"Make our son a little Boy on his Knees."
The Brass Ensemble played a trumpet special.
There is something about trumpets
that herald in JOY!  I love them!
The MARTINS sang!
The pastor gave an AWESOME sermon,
then the mens' choir ended with a FABULOUS song!
Like Alan said,
"We got our money's worth this morning."
Not really, it was all FREE!
HOPE TO SEE YOU TONIGHT!
STORM WATCH
You know me, I am a great storm watcher,
tornado chaser, and earthquake monitorer.
I noticed a huge storm in the Northwest.
Even though they did not call it a hurricane,
it certainly has the looks of one.
It had the strength of a Cat 4.
I contacted our daughter who lives in Seattle
to see if she was affected by the storm.
Last night she heard a lot of thunder in the storms.
They usually do not have thunder in Seattle.
She forgot to mention is she felt the 5.3 earthquake
that hit off the coast of Oregon.
Evidently not, or she would have said something.
I know, I know,
it is only interesting to me.
I could watch the weather channel all day long!
I AM THANKFUL
I am thankful for my Facebook Friends.
It is so much fun to be involved in their
lives and to encourage them in their projects.
A YEAR OF FIRSTS
This is a year of firsts for our very special grandson, Wyatt.
This is the first year he has ridden on the big yellow bus to school.
And, he has lost his first tooth.
Aaaaaand, he ran for the office of Citizen of the Month and won!
Maybe this is some indication of his future.
Even though he lives far away,
we always enjoy seeing him through pictures.
We love him!
I AM THANKFUL
November 6
I am thankful that the God that I love and serve says
"thou shalt not kill,
and
to love your neighbor as yourself."
I AM THANKFUL
November 5
I am thankful for our girls' book study on Wednesday nights.
Our leader does a fabulous job of facilitating us.
I look forward to being with these girls every week.
YOU TOO, MISTER!
(This is Wyatt a few years ago.)
Ainsley tells a humorous story about Wyatt, which happened
a few years ago when Wyatt was about 3 or 4 years old.
She had belted both boys into their seats with their seatbelts in the van.
Dylan was a baby in his seat, and Wyatt was beside him.
Ainsley was giving Wyatt a good talking to about
something when Wyatt turned to baby Dylan and
said,  "That means you too, mister!"
We all howl with laughter when we remember this
story.  I thought of this story this morning as
I read Psalm 53:3
"Every one of them has turned aside;
They have altogether become corrupt;
There is none who does good,
No, not one."
and it should be added,
and that means You too, Mr Christian!
All of our righteousness is as filthy rags.
Only what is done in our lives through
the Spirit of God, will be rewarded.
God wants to reveal himself to the world
through our lives, but we must yield to
the guiding and filling of the Holy Spirit.
I AM THANKFUL
November 4
I am thankful for my family.
I heard from a good many of them yesterday
either by phone or e-mail.
FROST ON THE PUMPKIN AND ICE IN THE BIRDBATH
It is 31 degrees this morning!
There is ice in the birdbath, but not for long.
I am sure that when the sun gets to it,
it will disappear.
Have you thought about whether this winter is going to be mild
or harsh?  Usually by now people are looking for signs.
Here are a few humorous ones:
1. The Starlings chirp with a Minnesota accent.
2. Squirrels keep knocking at your door.
3. Your cat is taking your clothes off the line
and wearing them.
4. Ten Woodpeckers share the same tree.
5. Crickets are in your soup bowl.
6. Wooly worms are wearing orange
hazmat jackets.
Seriously, you can go to the Farmers Almanac
to read some that people have actually
observed.
FALL FLUFFING
I spent the majority of my day outside doing some fall cleaning.
I heard the city's leaf truck coming early this morning.
If I had known they were coming today,
I could have been ready, but no.
I quickly threw on a sweatshirt and headed
out the door.  I raked what little leaves we
have to the front curb.
I was so thankful that the leaf truck stayed
down at Nancy's house until I got my leaves out.
I must ask her what the holdup was.
Was she serving coffee or what???
The oriental grasses look so nice and give the birds some
protection in the wintertime.  But........
the winter winds blow the plumes all over the
neighborhood.
In order to keep peace with our fellow neighbors,
we cut down the ones that are the most offensive.
I was half way down these 9 foot grasses
when a bird flew out and scared me to death.
One of his Halloween tricks, I guess!
I cut the grasses in 9 to 10 inches pieces so
they would be easy to bag.  I filled two
barrels full.
It was the last nice day for this week.
Wind and rains are supposed to be coming in.
Our beautiful marigolds that we saved with
BABY POWDER,
are still huge and looking good.
After the next good freeze
they will have to be removed.
Hope your day was a pleasant one!
I AM THANKFUL
NOVEMBER 3
I am thankful that I slept like a log last night.
I cannot remember when I have slept so well.
